December 14th, 2010 at 11:25 am. On finishing it I rushed out to my local library, and then on to the larger one in town, to get my hands on as many of the Stainless Steel Rat books as possible. I read today that Harry Harrison has died at the age of 87. James Bolivar DiGriz, alias 'Slippery Jim' and 'The Stainless Steel Rat,' is the fictional hero of a series of humorous science fiction novels written by Harry Harrison. I adore the Stainless Steel Rat books. Jim figured that getting in the slammer would get I second that motion - these were my introduction as a young lad to Harry Harrison and I quickly went on to read all of the Rat novels, still have a tremendous soft spot for them, although the last one was a few years back now. James “Slippery Jim” diGriz is a master criminal, a stainless steel rat in the wainscoting of society, a society that is becoming increasingly devoid of crime thanks to the successful efforts of the galaxy's infamous Special Corps. The basis for the film “Soylent Green”, and creator of a character that I have loved for years James Bolivar DiGriz “The Stainless Steel Rat”, passed away today at the age of 87. He is a futuristic con man, thief and all-round rascal. This one's a really simple idea: a film adaptation of the Stainless Steel Rat books by Harry Harrison. The Stainless Steel Rat is the nickname given to "Slippery" Jim diGriz, a ne'er-do-well who started his criminal career with a lengthy prison sentence. Before I get all sorts of hate mail, it is worth my pointing out that "Stainless Steel Rat" is a well-respected sci-fi comic, in which a guy who may as well be Lee Marvin runs around not being a giant, talking metal rat. Granted, and much to my shame, I've only read the first Stainless Steel Rat book… but I definitely don't remember anything to suggest he routinely wears giant aluminium naked-lady waders. Carlos art was just right for the character too. The stainless steel rat bows out. I grew up with them – my father's old Sphere paperbacks, and then 2000AD serialized The Stainless Steel Rat For President in 1984/5. As I have Nowadays, of course, it's all online, but back in the day, there were few geeky joys quite as fulfilling as receiving the new MHC catalog, and spending an afternoon paging through it, circling the titles that I desperately wanted to own. Cocky and self- assured, *A word of caution, if you happen to snag the copy that I show pictured above then avoid the back cover copy, which essentially tells you the gist of the entire book in three bullet points.
